Behind a pool's colour and texture lies a decision that directly affects maintenance, not every lining ages the same way, nor tolerates equally well the occasional chemical imbalances that are sometimes unavoidable.

Three finishes, three behaviours

Tiles last a long time if properly laid; a liner is the most affordable but the first to need replacing; polyester tolerates chemicals best and is the most durable of the three.
Mosaic tile

Very durable, needs a good installation

  • Great resistance if laid correctly
  • Good tolerance to chemical products
  • Grout lines can build up limescale over time
Liner

The cheapest, the one that needs renewing soonest

  • Faster and cheaper to install
  • More sensitive to sustained chemical imbalances
  • Shorter lifespan than the other options

Polyester (fibreglass), the most resistant option

Overall, it's the lining with the best tolerance to chemical products and the greatest durability of the three. Being a more continuous surface (without mosaic tile's grout lines), it also reduces the spots where dirt or limescale tend to build up over the years.

The lining doesn't replace chemical maintenanceA good lining holds up better against the occasional imbalance, but none of them is immune to consistently poorly cared-for water, chemical balance is still the foundation, whatever the material.

What to look at if you're deciding which one to choose

Beyond the initial budget, it's worth thinking about the total long-term cost: a cheaper liner today can mean a full renovation in a few years, while polyester or a well-installed mosaic tile spread that cost over a much longer period.
